Property Tax Assessment Process in Cayuga County

Each town in Cayuga County has its own assessor who sets property values. The county Real Property office compiles those values into the countywide roll. The tentative assessment roll comes out May 1 in most towns. Owners can review the values and talk to the assessor. Grievance Day falls on the fourth Tuesday in May for most jurisdictions. You file a complaint with the Board of Assessment Review, and they hear your case.

Under RPTL Section 305, tax rates must be uniform within each taxing district. After the board rules, the final roll gets published. If you still disagree with your assessment, you can take it to court under RPTL Article 7. Most disputes settle at the grievance stage. The county office can help you through the steps if you need guidance on the process.
