Huntington Property Tax Assessor's Office

Town Assessor Lisa Leonick runs the assessment office out of Room 100 at Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743. Call (631) 351-3226 to reach the office. The assessor determines the taxable value of every property in town, maintains the assessment roll, and administers exemption programs like STAR, veterans, and senior citizen exemptions.

Huntington's residential assessment ratio (RAR) is 0.63. That means homes get assessed at 0.63% of their full market value. This ratio matters when you calculate your actual tax bill, because the school district rate and library rate get applied to your assessed value, not the market value. Nine different school districts serve the town, with tax rates that range from about 198.656 in Northport up to 298.299 in Elwood.

The town also has four villages, each with its own assessment ratio. Asharoken sits at 3.94, Huntington Bay at 0.67, Lloyd Harbor at 0.66, and Northport at 1.06. If your property falls inside one of these villages, your tax bill calculation will differ from the rest of the town.

The Huntington Receiver of Taxes office provides an online portal where you can search by tax map number or physical address. Jillian Guthman, Esq. serves as Receiver of Taxes and can be reached at (631) 351-3217. The portal shows current and prior tax bills, outstanding balances, and exemption details for any Huntington parcel.

The town also runs a GIS mapping portal that shows parcel boundaries, zoning details, and land use layers. This tool lets you cross-reference tax information with zoning rules. It is a good way to see where a parcel sits and what rules apply to it before digging into the tax records.

Huntington Property Tax Payment Dates

Taxes in Huntington come due in two installments. The first is due January 10. The second is due May 31. Bills are payable starting December 10 and run through May 31. If you miss a deadline, late charges of 1% to 5% per month get added until May 31. After that date, taxes become delinquent and a 5% penalty kicks in on top of the interest.

Once taxes go delinquent, they transfer to the Suffolk County Comptroller's office. At that point you deal with the county, not the town. The Suffolk County Comptroller accepts partial payments of at least $200 for delinquent balances. Online payment is also available for delinquent taxes through the county system.

For current taxes, you can pay by mail with a check postmarked before the due date. In-person payments are taken at Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. There is also a drop box at Town Hall. Phone payments go through 1-800-272-9829. Online payment accepts credit, debit, and e-check.

Huntington Tax Rate Calculation

Your Huntington property tax bill depends on your school district rate, library rate, and combined code. The formula is simple. Take those rates, add them up, and multiply by your assessed value. But since there are nine school districts in the town, tax bills vary a lot from one neighborhood to another even when home values are close.

The Huntington financial reports page has data on the annual tax levy, collection rates, and how funds get split between the Town Supervisor and the County Treasurer. This gives you a sense of how much goes where. Uncollected and returned amounts are tracked too, so you can see the full picture of the town's tax collection work.

Huntington Property Tax Exemptions

The assessor's office handles exemption applications. STAR is the most common one. Basic STAR lowers school taxes for owner-occupied homes. Enhanced STAR gives a bigger cut for seniors 65 and up with qualifying income. Veterans, disabled residents, and certain nonprofits can also get partial or full exemptions under state law.

Under RPTL Section 502, the assessor must notify you when your assessment changes. The tentative roll goes public May 1, and Grievance Day falls on the fourth Tuesday in May. You file a complaint using Form RP-524 if you think your value is wrong. The Board of Assessment Review hears the case. If you still disagree, you can go to court under RPTL Article 7.

Note: The Municipal Data Portal has Huntington's equalization rate and assessor contact details for quick reference.
