Search Hempstead Property Tax Records

Hempstead property tax records are maintained through a mix of town, village, and county offices in Nassau County. The Town of Hempstead is the largest town in New York State by population, covering a wide stretch of western Long Island. Property assessments here are set by the Nassau County Department of Assessment, not by a local town assessor. You can search these records for free through the MyNassauProperty.com portal, which shows assessed values, tax maps, exemptions, and past tax data for every parcel in Hempstead. The Village of Hempstead also has its own assessor who handles village-level taxes separately.

Nassau County Assessment for Hempstead Property Tax Records

The Nassau County Department of Assessment sets the assessed value for every property in Hempstead. This is different from most New York towns, where a local assessor does the work. In Nassau County, the county handles it all. That means one office covers Hempstead, North Hempstead, Oyster Bay, and every other town in the county.

You can reach the Nassau County Assessor at (516) 571-1500. Their office processes exemption applications, maintains assessment rolls, and publishes the tentative roll each year. If you need to check your value, the online tools are the fastest way. But you can also call or visit in person.

The tentative assessment roll comes out on May 1 for most of the town. Property owners then have until Grievance Day to challenge their value. In Hempstead, that falls on the fourth Tuesday in May for town-level assessments. However, Nassau County runs its own grievance process through the Assessment Review Commission, which has a different window.

Search Hempstead Property Tax Records Online

The main tool for looking up Hempstead property tax records is MyNassauProperty.com. This free site is linked to the county's GIS system. You can search by address, owner name, or section-block-lot number. Results show assessment roll data, district info, tax maps, property photos, past taxes, tax rates, and exemption amounts. Comparable sales data is also there, which helps if you plan to grieve your assessment.

One thing to watch: the county assessor database and the county clerk database use different formats for section, block, and lot numbers. Make sure your search matches the format used by whichever system you are in. If a search returns no results, try switching the format or searching by name instead.

Note: Tax map copies can be purchased at the Tax Map Division window from 9 AM to 4:30 PM at the county office.

Village of Hempstead Property Tax Records

The Village of Hempstead has its own assessor. That is separate from the county assessment. Village Assessor Ronda Patton-Mesidor handles village-level property taxes. You can reach her office at 516-478-6290 or by email at rpatton@villageofhempsteadny.gov. Deputy Assessor Paulette Bermudez is also on staff.

The Village of Hempstead assessment page has details on how village taxes are calculated. Village taxes are billed separately from town and county taxes. If you live in the village, you get two sets of tax bills: one from the town (which includes county and school taxes) and one from the village.

Hempstead Property Tax Grievance Process

If you think your Hempstead property is assessed too high, you can file a grievance. Nassau County uses the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) for this. The filing period runs from January 2 to March 1 each year. There is no fee to file. Your assessment can only go down or stay the same. It cannot go up because of your grievance.

You file with the Nassau County ARC at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola, NY 11501. You can do this online, by mail, or in person. Some homeowners hire a representative to handle it, but you can also do it yourself. To get a paper application, call ARC at (516) 571-3214. Town residents can also pick one up by calling 311 or visiting the town tax office.

Gather recent comparable sales to support your case. The MyNassauProperty portal shows comp sales for properties near yours. If similar homes sold for less than what your assessment implies, that is strong evidence. Many Hempstead residents grieve each year and get reductions.

Hempstead Property Tax Exemptions

Hempstead property owners can apply for several tax exemptions. STAR is the most common. Basic STAR reduces school taxes for all owner-occupied homes. Enhanced STAR gives a larger break to seniors 65 and older who meet the income limit. You register through the state assessment portal or apply with the county assessor.

Veterans, seniors, and disabled homeowners each have their own programs. Under RPTL Section 458-a, veterans can get a partial exemption based on service record. RPTL Section 467 covers seniors with limited income. Before you change a name on a deed or move your primary residence, call the Department of Assessment at (516) 571-1500 to avoid losing your exemption. Deadlines for most exemptions fall in March.
